Fujifilm GFX 50S s II FIRST Review

However, there are some interesting things about this thing that we got to talk about, and i got a 100s recently and you could expect to see some comparisons and a ton of content. Comparing these two and talking about the 50s 2 at length in future videos. But at first glance this looks to be a shot across the bow looking at people that are professional image makers and those that are having something thats a bit long in the tooth in terms of their imaging solution and those that are in predominantly controlled environments, studio Product that kind of thing telling them that hey, you really want to bump up in image quality. Well, we got something for you, medium format, goodness, okay, listen lets talk about this camera lets talk about what it can do. I got to take it to several different environments. A poolside fashion show we got to take it outdoors during a photo walk. Oh, i also got to take it from that desk to this wall and do some product shots, so that was really cool, and all of this has left me with some really interesting thoughts about what this camera can do and who its for and were going to Talk about that in this video so with that out of the way lets get this started, but god might be on vacation and the promised land aint never promised a baby telling me to be patient, but the devil always working overnight.

My darling all right moment of complete honesty. It is, it is late, it is very late. It is way past my bedtime, because if you follow me on instagram, you know im a morning person so were going to do it a little bit differently. I wrote down my thoughts and i might be glancing at this thing and then talking to you guys just to keep on track, because you know what im not going to do this twice. No im not going to record a video twice not today were going to get this done were going to do it together. So lets talk about this camera, so first things. First, you have a 51 megapixel medium format sensor that again they will tell you 70 larger than full frame, unique, rendering all that kind of stuff, yada yada yada its great great stuff. But this sensor is an older sensor, its the one that they originally announced years ago. A contrast based focusing sensor that when you compare this to the 100s, because the 100s is a backside, illuminated sensor youre actually going to get the same dynamic range, even though the photo sights are larger on the 50s to sensor now enough. For that technical jargon, what it basically boils down to is that you can expect up to 14 stops of dynamic range, maybe a little bit more in the field, which is fantastic if youre capturing things that have a lot of shifting between light and dark, especially skin.

If you really want to get that gradation in the skin, tons of tons and tons and tons and tons of dynamic range for you to work with, maybe that was too many tons. Okay, i i i shouldnt go here and throw that many tons at this thing. Now, with this camera, they did upgrade the processor. The processor is now a fourth generation, quad core that theyve been using for a lot of their recent cameras that theyve announced – and this is something that brings in a ton of new features, a slew of new features that many of you already would have heard about. On previous fujifilm cameras such as the tone curve, nostalgic, negative focus, limiter, better autofocus, an upgraded pixel shift that gives you a 205 megapixel image, the clarity, adjustments and well about 70, more new upgrades and features in this camera compared to the first 50s, oh, and that Pixel shift its its getting better and better again, if you want to take this massive billboard, esque shot and youre working with things that are not moving like i was here, you could take this image and spit out a 205 megapixel image. That would well really future proof, whatever it is youre capturing now i didnt mention it yet, and i probably should have let off with this thing. The 50s 2 has the exact same body and dimensions as the 100s. I asked if there was even a marginal difference, not really the only way to tell them apart is on the left side of the camera under the gfx.

You will see 50s too now, with that identical body and and size and weight. Even you have an improved image stabilization unit this one because of the sensor. You actually get six and a half stops of image stabilization compared to the 50s, which is a little bit less, not a huge difference. But ultimately, what it means is that, if youre in the field, if youre shooting handheld, you can go down to a fifth of a second, maybe even half a second and get really usable shots, and that is quite crazy. So if youre, the kind of person that likes to add motion in your shot, you might actually want to turn off the image stabilization so its not counteracting the creative adjustments you might be doing with your camera. Oh and before i move on listen theres about 75 of you that enjoy these videos and youre not subscribed, so if youre not subscribed subscribe, and you can always mute me after the fact i wont take it personally now, when i was talking to fujifilm, they told Me that this has an improved autofocus mechanism and can focus as low as 3.5 ev and how the numbers on the chart, when i was looking at them, didnt spell out a huge difference between this camera and something like the 100s from fujifilm. In practice, when i was in a tough situation and heres the thing heres, the thing it is a tough situation, low, light fashion show not a lot of spotlights um and motion involved in this.

You know not a lot of contrast in some places. In those environments, the autofocus was nearly unusable and when i turned on the focus, peaking and tried to manual focus, even that was challenging, because the sensor – and i imagine it is the sensor – couldnt – render it in as clear away as the sensors on newer cameras. Like the xt4 or the 100s do so when i was using this thing in that environment, i had to go manual focus and i almost had to do this pseudo zone, focusing where i would look at the bottom range and estimate it to you know. Maybe three or three or four meters i should say, and from there try to map my shots and if youre wondering a lot less shots landed than i had hoped for, but heres the thing when i was using a flash unit on this camera shooting with a Low shutter speed and predicting where the subject would be, it was still possible to get an in focus shot, but this camera is not going to do you any favors. This camera is not going to do the heavy lifting you really have to bring that gusto. You have to bring that technical knowledge really have to apply to get those in focus shots in these kinds of environments and thats, the big delineation between a camera like the 50 s2 and the 100s. The 100s brings so much that you know it does a lot of things automatic for you.

It makes the job really really easy: the 50 s2, if youre, going to be taking it out to low light low contrast, high moving environments. The onus is on you, my friend, you got ta, make sure youre able to back it up now. That being said, when i was capturing during the daytime during a quick photo walk, it was crazy fast. This thing i mean i couldnt perceive a difference between this camera and the 100s and ill have to do more testing on this, but it was something that worked very reliably in well lit environments and really impressed me in that. You know what, with this small body, affordable pricing and a lens like the 35 to 70, this can be a decent walk around solution that, if youre capturing architecture or landscapes, where you know there is a good amount of ambient light available, a very usable solution and Again to an already fantastic sensor, and when i say fantastic sensor, i should clarify that the image quality of the sensor is really really really good. Ive used the sensor before, and i have some images in my portfolio that im very proud of from this sensor and they still hold up and whats great, is that when youre capturing this, you just have a beautiful gradation in in skin tones or even fabrics that You can go back to and really pull a lot of detail from, oh and, if youre using this camera, make sure to turn on the rapid af setting.

So it is at the fastest performance possible. Whats. Nice is that this uses the xt4 battery that they introduce a nice slim battery, which gives you about 455 shots according to them good amount of battery life with this camera so turn on that rapid af, its something that youll probably want to rely on, especially if Youre using it in more movement, dynamic environments, i think what really impressed me the most is that having a camera like this in a portrait studio setting in a product photography setting – and maybe maybe people that are capturing outdoor events again – depends on how much movement is Involved, i think, thats, really where this camera is going to shine. Oh, i should also mention architecture and maybe some landscapes, but you know that kind of stuff. Well, i think thats a really special spot for the 50s 2. now to wrap this up. If i had to predict, i feel like there might be this narrative of uh pooh poohing this camera because of the sensor, and i think that early reviewers that might get their hands on on this are going to be overly critical of what holds back this sensor. In some situations, and to that i say well, at the end of the day, these sensors are better than 95 of photographers. So while you cant use it in every scenario, there are still quite a bit where you can use a camera like this and expect great results.

It really comes back to people like fujifilm and their marketing team. People like myself that are taking these things and testing it out to better qualify and really say whos, going to get the most value out of a solution like this, and i think ive highlighted a few spaces industries genres that can expect that value. I look to test this out even further and bring this content in future videos and expand on this.
